Records of the Elder plant's medicinal use date back over a thousand years. The flowers were traditionally used for the treatment of cold symptoms, coughs and asthma. 

The Elder flower is primary used to ease respiratory tract conditions, due to its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is helpful for easing lung congestion, excess mucus, colds, coughs, sinusitis and fever.

It also has a mild laxative effect on the gastro-intestinal tract, and so is helpful in regulating bowel functions.
